CSSLRV Director Myrna Dawson presented research conducted with Michelle Carrigan titled, “Gender-based indicators for femicide: Understanding their utility in social science research,” at the Stockholm Criminology Symposium in Sweden. Using gender-based indicators identified in the Latin American Protocol for the Investigation of Gender-Related Killings of Women (Femicide/Feminicide), their study draws from ongoing research documenting femicide in on Canadian jurisdiction over four decades. Their paper examines the accessibility of gender-based indicators by determining the ability to collect these data from various data sources and their utility by comparing the presence of indicators in killings of women, or femicide, to killings of men or homicide. This research will help identify priorities for future research regarding the collection of data and the reliability and validity of gender based indicators.
