Research examines police perspectives on challenges of keeping families safe from domestic violence
July 13, 2020
Research this month was published in the Journal of Interpersonal Violence, analyzing police perspectives toward their own response to intimate partner violence (IPV). Qualitative analyses showed many challenges police officers face in responding to IPV, including barriers at the systemic, organizational, and individual levels. The researchers also highlighted police officers' recommendations for overcoming barriers. Overall, results continue to show inconsistent approaches to assessing and managing risk towards families experiencing intimate partner violence. Recommendations underscored the need for collaborations between community and justice partners. Future research priorities highlighted were the need for more training to address the risks posed to high-risk families and more collaborative approaches to support the prevention and intervention of IPV.
